What to Expect When Getting Dentures?

At Portland City Dental we take your oral health seriously, and we are committed to improving it when you are faced with dental problems. This is the reason why we offer you a complete range of dental solutions to remedy any oral health issue you may have. Dentures are one of these solutions, and they are very useful for replacing missing teeth, especially in the case of several (or full) missing teeth. If you are considering a solution for your missing (or about to be extracted) teeth, read on below to find out more about the denture solution.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are synthetic dental appliances that are used to replace missing teeth. They feature an artificial set of teeth, which are supported by a denture base made using flesh-looking material (to resemble the gum tissues). Dentures help to restore your oral functionality, especially when it comes to talking and eating. They also help to restore your natural look and smile, as the dentures are made from natural looking materials.

Types of Dentures

There are two denture options that you can receive depending on your dental health condition. These are:
•  Complete Dentures - complete dentures are used to replace all teeth on one or both of the jawbones. They feature a denture base designed to fit your entire dental ridge, and a complete set of teeth to replace the missing ones. Complete dentures are usually removable, requiring the use of a suction device or adhesive when you need to wear them. However, they can also be permanently fixed to the jawbone by using dental implants - implant supported dentures.
•  Partial Dentures - partial dentures are used when one or more of your natural teeth remain on the jawbone. They feature a denture base designed to fit into the missing tooth space, and which holds a specific set of artificial teeth to replace the missing ones. The denture is attached to the adjacent natural teeth using a metal framework. However, it can also be permanently fixed onto the jawbone through the use of dental implants.

How Are Dentures Made?

Dentures are designed using natural-looking materials - acrylic resin for the denture base and ceramic for the artificial teeth. The design is based on the impression of your natural teeth, which helps to ensure a perfect, comfortable fit, and at the same time, restore the natural look and function of your teeth.

Two options can be used to make the dentures. They include:
•  Development in a dental lab - this is the conventional way of making dentures. It involves taking an impression of your natural teeth before extraction and sending it to the dental lab for the custom fabrication of a set of dentures. The process is, however, time-consuming, usually taking some weeks.
•  Computer-aided manufacturing at the office - dentures can also be made from a digital model of your teeth that is designed using your dental images. This model is then fed into a 3D manufacturing machine to create a custom set of dentures. The process is fast - completed in a matter of minutes. Therefore, it allows for the immediate placement of your dentures on the same day your teeth are extracted.

Dentures to Implant Bridge

Are you missing several teeth, but not enough to have full-arch teeth replacements? Dentures to implant bridges can provide an attractive, functional, and long-term solution. Unlike fixed or removable bridges, an implant-supported bridge does not need support from natural teeth, while still restoring the aesthetics of your smile and preserving your chewing ability. If you have any missing teeth and you want to discuss your options, contact Portland City Dental to talk to our experienced team about dentures, bridges, and implants.
