Dental Implant Procedure
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed in the jaw to hold a bridge or a prosthetic tooth. These dental posts are like screws for holding artificial teeth. How your dentist performs dental procedures depends on the implant. You may have numerous dental procedures to allow your jawbone to heal properly during the implant.
Initial Evaluation
Your oral surgeon or dentist will first do a comprehensive examination to check your jawbone condition and determine the best dental implant procedure. This evaluation involves taking impressions and x-rays and matching the color of the teeth so that the implant looks natural. They will also determine the number of teeth that need to be replaced with implants.
Bone Grafting and Inserting the Dental Implant
Your jaw needs to be strong so that we can support the implant. In case your jaw requires some extra bone, you will need bone grafting which typically comes from other places different from the implant region. You will need to first heal before adding the implant. Once the bone heals, the next procedure is dental implant placement.
There are two types of dental implants: one goes directly under the gum line and the other is inserted into your jawbone. The two main dental implant materials used for dental implants are zirconia and titanium. After the implant is added to your jawbone, the jawbone will start to grow around the implant.
Abutment Placement
After the implant becomes stable enough, the dentist can place an abutment on the implant top. You will not feel any pain during this procedure except for a little pressure.
Adding the Permanent Crown
After your gums heal, the surgeon will make your crown or artificial tooth. You can choose between permanent or removable implants. The crown is then attached to the abutment. It is normal to have some discomfort after the surgery. You may notice swelling around your gums and face, bruising on your gums, some pain at the implant site, or some minor bleeding. But this takes a few days and then goes away. It is important to keep up good hygiene habits so that you can protect your implant. That means brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily.
